The Lightness of Being Project · Invitation-Only
Multi-day immersions and point-to-point micro-expeditions in rare wilderness — for women ready for a serious conversation with themselves.
The premise
Imagine stepping out of your current life into a remote, beautifully crafted space in an epic landscape — no schedule to manage, no one needing anything from you.
These are not trips. They are encounters — with wildness, with yourself, and with a small circle of others who understand the weight you carry.
Together, Immersions and Micro-expeditions form the experiential foundation of The Lightness of Being Project. They give you direct access to the things that salons and conversations alone can only point toward.
Both formats are designed, held, and co-led by Sarah Marquis — one of the world's most accomplished solo wilderness expeditionists.
Gate II · First Experience
Multi-day, small-group stays in a single exquisite location — remote, private, and fully held. Your days follow a simple, repeating rhythm: time in the elements, generous unstructured space that is fully yours, and shared evenings held by a single question or ritual.
There is no program to "get through," yet there is a precise structure in how the environment and the group are held around you. This is often where women like you first feel what it's like to be deeply supported in wild places — and to sit in confidential adjacency with peers who understand the weight you carry.
Gate II · Second Experience
Once you've tasted stillness, Micro-expeditions invite you one step further. Instead of staying in one exquisite place, you move — point-to-point along routes that Sarah Marquis has already walked herself.
The container becomes the track: three to five hours of walking most days, simple camps or small refuges, weather and terrain as honest, unscripted variables. Here, instinct stops being an idea and becomes something you can feel in your body — how you respond when you are a little tired, a little stretched, and still moving.
These journeys reveal patterns that stay hidden in more comfortable settings, and forge bonds under a shared, gentle load.
Together, Immersions and Micro-expeditions give you direct encounters with wildness, with yourself, and with a small circle of others — in ways that salons and conversations alone can only point toward. This is where The Lightness of Being Project becomes something you carry in your body, not just in your thinking.
Your guide into the wild
National Geographic Society Explorer · Author · Solo Expeditionist
Sarah Marquis has walked alone through some of the most unforgiving terrain on earth — from Siberia to Australia, across the salt-water crocodile-infested Outback, through the Andes. She has been named National Geographic Adventurer of the Year and is on Condé Nast Traveller's list of the World's Most Influential Women Travelers.
In these experiences she does not guide from the front. She holds the container. What she brings is a particular kind of clarity that only comes from having been somewhere completely wild and found yourself equal to it.
Immersions and Micro-expeditions are your field introduction to everything The Lightness of Being Project is built on.
